A route designed with nature in mind
Long seen as little more than a stopping point along the coast road, the Macondé rock finally has a trail worthy of its views. Opened this morning, the new Eco-Trail offers an immersive walk between land and sea, designed with respect for the local ecosystem.
A route designed with nature in mind
Unlike the old informal paths that were weakening the cliff, this new 4.5-kilometre route was mapped out together with local ecologists. The aim: to let walkers get close to the viewpoints without disturbing nesting seabirds or trampling the endemic plants.
The path is surfaced with natural materials — crushed volcanic rock and reclaimed wooden sleepers — so that it blends into the landscape of the wild South.
What to bring
Although it is rated "easy to moderate", the Macondé Eco-Trail is very exposed to the sun and sea winds. Bring good walking shoes, plenty of water and sun protection. The best time to go is sunrise, when the golden light hits the rocks and the heat is still gentle.
Access is free, from sunrise to sunset.
This trail isn't just a walk, it's a way to reconnect with the raw energy of the Indian Ocean. We wanted every step to be a reminder of both the fragility and the strength of our coastline.
